The present invention provides a method and a wireless communication device that reduce delay associated with packet transmission. The medium access contol (MAC) functionalities are splitted in a HW (hardware) and a SW (software) part. Selected MAC functions are performed directly in a hardware MAC layer rather than being forwarded to a software MAC layer for processing. There is flexibility in carrying out a function either in the HWMAC or SWMAC based on what actions have been enabled for HWMAC. This can accommodate design changes in the solution and ever changing standard requirements. The allocation of a portion of the MAC functionality to the HWMAC allows reducing the delay when carrying out, in particular, real-time functions.
