PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tool inspection apparatus and method, which can precisely sort workpieces such as tips or the like used as blade edges of tools in accordance with their shapes for respective classes, and also carry out a defective inspection or the like of the sorted workpieces. SOLUTION: The tool inspection apparatus includes: a support section 18 for supporting a workpiece 12 being the tip used as a blade edge of a tool; a ring illumination 20 for illuminating the workpiece 12; a reflecting surface 16 which is configured such that illumination light of the ring illumination 20 is reflected diffusely thereby, and the workpiece 12 can be illuminated with the reflected light; a camera 24 configured to able to photograph the workpiece 12 illuminated by the ring illumination 20 and the reflecting surface 16; a display device 32 for displaying an image photographed by the camera 24; and an image processing device 28 which carries out an image processing for a silhouette image of the workpieces 12 photographed by the camera 24.
