PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for urgently stopping an olefin polymerization reaction, by which the backflow of a monomer in a polymerization reaction tank into a polymerization reaction-stopping agent storage device after the finish of an emergent stopping operation is prevented in a process for producing an olefin polymer in a polymerization tank for polymerizing the olefin in the presence of a catalyst. SOLUTION: This method for urgently stopping the olefin polymerization reaction is characterized by charging a reaction-stopping agent from a reaction stopping agent storage tank into a liquid phase polymerization tank and/or a gas phase polymerization tank and then shutting off the reaction stopping agent storage tank and the liquid phase polymerization tank and/or the gas phase polymerization tank after a predetermined time to prevent the backflow of the reaction gas and the like into the polymerization reaction tank, according to a preliminarily determined procedure by the reaction stopping agent storage tank and a reaction-stopping agent-charging device comprising double gate valves, a middle purge valve and a piping, in a process for producing the olefin polymer in the liquid phase polymerization tank and/or the gas phase polymerization tank for polymerizing the olefin in the presence of a catalyst.
