PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for searching for the position of fissionable material, concentrated locally or existing in masses in radioactive waste. SOLUTION: In the device for measuring radioactive waste where a fast neutron generation tube and a fast neutron detector are placed, a reference sample of fissionable material is mounted on the surface of the drum of the waste to be measured to conduct a measurement; the straight line for position determination is defined from the data of the maximum measured value and the minimum value measured in the radially opposite directions (180°) with respect to the angle point (0°direction) of the maximum measured value and a measurement is carried out at every certain angle, while rotating the drum actually stowing waste to find an angle point showing the maximum measured value. Subsequently, the drum is rotated in an angle direction radially opposing the angle point, showing the maximum measured value; measurement is conducted in the position and measurement data at two points required for the determination of existing position are acquired to determine the location of a mass of fissionable material, on the basis of the numerical values derived from the measurement data and the straight line for location determination.
