A signal from an impact sensor (fig 3, 22) located in street furniture 10 causes an electrical supply (fig 3, 24) to electrical components within the street furniture 10 to be disconnected by a monitoring unit (fig 3, 30) at a location 14 that is remote from the furniture. The system reduces the danger of sparks and electric shocks should the furniture collapse as a result of a collision. Monitoring unit 30 may comprise: a visual indicator of the status of the electrical supply; a reset switch; a telemetry system for indicating activation of the sensor to a control room; or the ability to monitor other features of the street furniture for failures or errors. Sensor (fig 3, 22) may be an accelerometer, and the supply may be disconnected by a multi-pole circuit breaker. Street furniture 10 may comprise a traffic signal. |
