<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data compression apparatus capable of furthermore compressing data having been compressed by a prediction coding system. <P>SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus 2 applies entropy decoding to codes (prediction error values) corresponding to image regions falling short of expected prediction among coded data in an RGB (Red, Green and Blue) color space, changes the decoded prediction error values in the RGB color space into prediction error values in a YCbCr color space, and applies entropy coding to the prediction error values in the YCbCr color space. Since the dynamic range of the prediction error values is decreased in the YCbCr color space, the coding efficiency of the entropy coding is improved.
