PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the compression efficiency of a latitude/longitude data stream, and to also improve compressibility. SOLUTION: Latitude data and longitude data of latitude/longitude data are constituted of a plurality of byte digits (segment data) representing different resolutions (20,000 to 40,000km, 110km, 500m, and the like). In a compressing apparatus 12 for the latitude/longitude data stream, byte digits representing substantially the same resolutions are extracted from the plurality of byte digits each comprising an acquired latitude/longitude data stream, and variable length encoding is applied to the extracted byte digit.
