PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of being unable to perform data registration of an arbitrary infrared operating device additionally after the system installation, in an automatic meter reading system in which automatic meter reading is performed by a wireless means. SOLUTION: The automatic meter reading system includes a wireless master unit to be connected to a remotely measured meter reading unit via a line, and an infrared incorporated wireless subunit disposed opposite to the wireless master unit and installed in the vicinity of an infrared operating device of a user. The infrared operating device can be controlled remotely through the communication between the wireless master unit and the wireless subunit by means of the radio, and through the communication from the wireless subunit to the infrared device by means of the infrared, thereby enabling communication between the infrared device and the remotely measured meter reading unit. With the provision of an infrared reception unit in the wireless subunit of the above automatic meter reading system, and by enabling infrared data input and registration from the above reception unit, and by enabling infrared data transmission arbitrarily registered from the wireless subunit; the infrared device having the infrared reception unit is operated from the remote meter reading device through the wireless master unit and the wireless subunit.
