PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which performs printing on a printing medium by using a battery, an alternator and the like as a driving power source, which particularly provides the notification and display of a battery life by accurately determining the battery life when a dry battery is in a usable state, and which does not cause an erroneous operation even if power is supplied from the alternator via an AC/DC adaptor. SOLUTION: When printing data equivalent to one line constituting the printing data are printed in the printing operation of a tape printer 1, an applied voltage, which is applied to a thermal head 33, is acquired by a circuit 54 for detecting the voltage applied to the head, and a current-carrying time, when an electric current passes through a heating element arranged in the thermal head 33, is controlled on the basis of data on the applied data. The battery life is determined on the basis of the current-carrying time in each printing period constituting the printing data, and a determination standard associated with the current-carrying time, so that the accurate battery life can be determined without the erroneous operation even in the use of the alternator.
