PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal medium which can operate in a liquid crystal display, operates at a temperature at which the medium exhibits a blue phase, and has a low operating voltage, temperature dependence with a low operating voltage, and improved reliability. SOLUTION: This invention relates to the following: mesogenic compounds represented by formula I; a medium containing one or more kinds of the compounds, preferably a mesogenic medium exhibiting a blue phase; the use of them in electrooptical light modulation elements; the use of them in displays; and such devices.
