PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To satisfy the needs for an improvement, as a safety precaution, of a freely removable knock-cover or a cap on the backside of a pencil lead storage tank attached inside of the mechanical pencil in light of recently recognized concern for safety to the children regarding the cap of mechanical pencil as well as that of ball-point pencil. SOLUTION: The mechanical pencil of this invention comprises a pencil lead delivery mechanism inside the pencil tube, and a pencil lead storage tank on the back side of this delivery mechanism, and the freely removable cap on the backside of the pencil lead storage tank. The above-mentioned cap of the pencil lead storage tank is so constructed to have air circulation holes on its top surface and to position the top part of the above-mentioned pencil lead storage tank below the circulation hole.
