PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cyclic flaw detecting method of a strip-like member or a columnar member which enables the judgment of the presence of a cyclic flaw with high precision even in the case of the non-detection or excessive detection of a flaw candidate or much noise due to a single flaw, and a cyclic flaw detector of the strip-like member or the columnar member. SOLUTION: The surface image of the moving strip-like member or columnar member is taken and the taken image is processed to detect the cyclic flaw. In this cyclic flaw detecting method of the strip-like member or columnar member, a plurality of flaw candidates appearing so as to leave an interval in the longitudinal direction of the strip-like member or columnar member are extracted from the taken image and the correlation of the flaw candidate image F(x) at the position (x) in the longitudinal direction with the flaw candidate image F(x+τ), when the position on the longitudinal direction is shifted byτ, is operated on the basis of a degree of simularity of the image. Further, the sum total of the degrees of similarity is calculated with respect to the longitudinal direction andτis changed to compare the sum total of the degrees of similarity to detect the cyclic flaw.
