Method in which a workpiece to be welded is examined prior to welding to determine any differences between actual and nominal seam positions. The predetermined welding path is then corrected based on the measured differences. The examination of the workpiece surface for determining the differences is carried out, at least close to the seam path, using the same optical elements which are also used to guide the welding laser beam. An independent claim is made for a device for tracking a weld path prior to laser welding.
