PURPOSE:To prevent a paper sheet feed device to be used by an unauthorized person, by discriminating a signal width of a data lead signal by a discriminating circuit and exciting a clutch only when the signal width is a regular one. CONSTITUTION:A data lead signal 24 is a short signal of about 20mus as a lead pulse for confirming a status of a cartridge prior to feeding a note. The construction of the device is such that a clutch can be excited only when the data lead signal 24 with a prescribed signal width is applied to a clutch control circuit 33 prior to a clutch exciting signal 32. As a result, a note is prevented from being taken out from a cartridge by an unauthorized person.
