The present invention relates to a device for monitoring brood mares coming to the end of gestation, which, with the aid of means for monitoring space, such as photoelectric detectors, draws the rearer's attention when the brood mare lies down, at that moment instigating the operation of one or more audible or visual alarm systems. The device establishes, in the location where there is a brood mare waiting to foal, a monitoring barrier or wall which is as horizontal as possible, at the height of the body of the brood mare, the latter being in the upright position, and operates the alarm system when the brood mare lies down, in this way passing under the established barrier or wall.
