A PROCESS FOR THE TREATMENT OF COALTAR PITCH HYDROGENATION

Coal tar pitch is hydrogenated under compressed H2 pressure in the presence of hydrogenation catalyst. Coal tar pitch is selected by distilling coal tar having high density and the obtained coal tar pitch is hydrogenated under H2 pressure in the presence of hydrogenation catalyst prepared by supporting at least one selected from metal or metal compounds of Group VIB Group VIII on a fire resistant inorganic oxide carrier. Degree of deactivation of hydrogenation catalyst is less when pitch obtained by the distillation of high density coal tar is hydrogenated than when such pitch obtained by distillation of low density coal tar is hydrogenated.
