A heat-treated steel product has improved mechanical and physical properties, in particular in the dimensional range of steel wire bar and light steel sections. The steel can be used with advantage as a construction steel. The mechanical and technological properties of the steel are improved in such a way that in the case of concrete-reinforcing steels an advantageous intermediate structure for subsequent thermal hardening is achieved. In the case of purely ferriticperlitic construction steels, a favourable final structure is selected. These structural states are achieved in direct combination with the thermal hardening or simply through the heat treating of the steel in the rolling process. Throughout its cross section the steel possesses heterogeneous structural and strength properties, with only the boundary zone being normalized. In the case of a construction steel, it consists of a non-normalized, ferritic-perlitic core region surrounded by a normalized, ferritic-perlitic boundary zone. On the other hand, in the case of a as a thermally hardened concrete-reinforcing steel, the steel consists of a non-normalized, ferritic-perlitic core region surrounded by a normalized and subsequently tempered boundary zone.
