The machine applies a transfer to a cylindrical surface such as a metal can. The surface of the can is coated with a material which has an affinity for the colouring matter of the transfer. The can (26) is supported on a mandrel (19) whilst a device (20) which supports the transfer is wrapped around the can (26). The transfer is held in place by a support (23) and by a retaining finger (24) whilst the transfer is heated so that the design on the transfer is transferred to the can surface.
