PURPOSE:To allow the impression of effective electric fields equally to all plane optical waveguides by disposing electrodes on the front and rear surfaces of a base body on the upper and lower sides of the corresponding plane optical waveguides. CONSTITUTION:The plane optical waveguide type optical device has 3 pieces of the plane optical waveguides 11, 12, 13 formed on the base body 4. A buffer layer 6 is formed atop the base body 4. The electrodes 31, 32, 33 are formed along the plane optical waveguides 11, 12, 13 respectively above the plane optical waveguides 11, 12, 13 on the buffer layer 6. A buffer layer 5 is formed on the rear surface of the base body 4. The base body 4 is so formed that the plane optical waveguides 11, 12, 13 exist above the respective electrodes 21, 22, 23 and both ends of the electrodes 21, 22, 23 are exposed on a substrate 7 larger than the base body 4 formed with the electrodes 21, 22, 23 on the surface. The directions of the electric fields impressed to the respective plane optical waveguides 11 to 13 are parallel with each other, are perpendicular to the respective plane optical waveguides 11 to 13, and are parallel in the vertical direction of Fig. The impression of the effective electric fields equally to all the plane optical waveguides is possible in this way. |
