PURPOSE:To limit the number of generation in digital recording by updating and recording generation information every time the digital recording is executed and inhibiting the digital recording in the case of attaining a specified generation. CONSTITUTION:When dubbing is executed on a tape 9, a sub code decoder 21 discriminates whether the generation of the tape is the generation to be updated or whether succeeding dubbing can not be executed on the tape because the tape attains a certain generation. When the obtained generation information is inputted in a discrimination part 11 through a digital recording control signal conversion part 22, the discrimination part 11 discriminates whether or not a digital input signal is a signal which can be recorded by updating the generation. Then, a digital recording control signal generation part 12 records the updated generation information different from the reproduced tape on the tape according to the input signal which is judged.
