PURPOSE:To produce a fuel tank having increased heat-resistance and decreased fuel transmissivity by irradiating the outer surface of a tank having a polyethylene outer layer with electron ray, etc., and treating with a solution containing acrylonitrile. CONSTITUTION:The outer surface of a fuel tank having an outer polyethylene layer, preferably a tank having a multiple multilayer structure and produced by sandwiching a gas-barrier layer (e.g. polyamide) with outer polyethylene layers interposing an adhesive layer (e.g. modified polyolefin) is irradiated with gamma-ray, electron ray or ultraviolet ray (preferably electron ray) and treated with a liquid containing acrylonitrile at a concentration of >=5wt.% (preferably acrylonitrile diluted with benzene, water, etc.) to obtain the fuel tank having an acrylonitrile-grafted polyethylene layer and exhibiting excellent heat-resistance and low fuel transmissivity. As an alternative method, the tank is produced by treating the outer surface of the tank with an acrylonitrile-containing liquid, irradiating with electron ray, etc., washing with a cleaning agent (e.g. acetone) and drying the product. |
