An electronic control unit (3) receives signals from sensors of engine coolant temp. (2), crankshaft angular position (4), intake air temp. (7), accelerator pedal position (13), atmos. pressure (14) and battery voltage (100). Another sensor (5) emits a pulse at a given crankshaft angle (e.g. 90 deg.) in advance of TDC in a particular cylinder. If the pivot angle of the camshaft carrier arm is measured to be different from its optimal setting, a correction is applied by forward or backward rotation of the engine, as appropriate. ADVANTAGE - The rocker arm ratio can be varied to adapt the operation of the inlet valve as desired for easier restarting.
