In current processes for generating colour tones, in which no actual pigments are intermixed, screen dots of various colours, shapes and sizes are arranged side by side and one on top of the other on the surface. It is impossible with round screen shapes to form a fully covering surface and the problem with right-angled screen shapes is the difficulty of determining the positioning of screen dots of more than two colours. The process according to the invention produces a uniform, covering colour surface 5 according to Fig. 1 without mutual overlapping of the different colour component regions 2,3,4. The positioning of different colour components is made simple by the use of screen dots having right-angled perimeters 2,3,4. <IMAGE>
