Apparatus to establish the level of a fluid, which is suitable for being fitted to a fluid reservoir, comprising a winding body which can rotate around its central axis and can be driven by a flexible pulling element which can be wrapped round it and by one end is connected to a driving body. The winding body is drivingly connected to a recording means and a passive control means suitable for applying to the winding body a force in the direction opposite to the pulling direction of the flexible pulling element which can be wrapped round the winding body. The winding body is accommodated in a housing which can be mounted in such a way on a fluid reservoir, with the flexible pulling element running through an opening in the reservoir wall, that said opening with said housing is sealed in a substantially fluid-tight manner, the recording means being disposed outside the housing for the winding body and, according to the invention, the passive control means being disposed outside the housing for the winding body.
