[Class 89 (i)] A self-locking screw 15, particularly applicable for adjusting valve tappets, comprises a shank portion with a pair of axially spaced threaded sections 17, 18, the leads of the threads of which are relatively offset axially, a tapered portion interconnecting the two threaded sections, and an axially extending diametrically disposed slot 19 in the end of the shank. The threads of sections 17, 18 may be of the same pitch, and the slot 19 may extend as far as the section 17. To prevent the threaded section 18 from binding with the threads 11 inside member 10, the sides of this section are relieved, as by means of the flattened surfaces 22, Fig. 5, substantially perpendicular to the slot 19.
