A process where the carbon dioxide concentration in an air mixture may be increased by means of a gas separation membrane, employing either Knudsen diffusion, molecular sieving, surface diffusion, capillary condensation or a solution diffusion permeation mechanism to produce a product gas which may be used as a feedstock for the production of hydrocarbon fuels. The process enables the extraction of carbon dioxide gas from atmospheric air to produce a final enriched product of gas concentration of >90 v/o, (v/o = volume percent). The process may employ a single membrane module or a cascade comprising a plurality of stages of membrane modules arranged in series with a compressor 4 between each stage and recycling of gas between stages. The membrane stages may be the same or different. A membrane/cascade process may also be used to increase the concentration of the carbon dioxide in the product gas to less than 90 v/o followed by a Pressure Swing Adsorption process to complete the carbon dioxide extraction.
|
