PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recombinant vector having a selected desired phenotype useful in various applications (including gene therapy and recombinant protein production) and other related advantages.

SOLUTION: The isolated nucleic acid molecule comprises an alphavirus nonstructural protein gene which, when operably incorporated into a recombinant alphavirus particle, increases the time required to reach 50% inhibition of host cell-directed macromolecular synthesis following expression in mammalian cells, as compared to a wild-type alphavirus.
