OPTICAL DISC DEVICE AND OPTICAL DISC TYPE IDENTIFYING METHOD

An optical disc device includes an optical head unit, drive means, and recording plane state identifying means. The optical disc device identifies an optical disc type according to the state of the information recording plane. The information recording plane includes; a managing region having a track formed by a guide groove or a prepit string where managing information is recorded; and a data recording region having a track formed by a guide groove or a prepit string where user data is recorded. The optical head unit applies a converging beam onto the information recording plane of the rotating optical disc. The drive means drives the optical head unit so as to move the converging beam in the radial direction of the optical disc. The recording plane state identifying means identifies the state of the information recording plane according to the reflected light of the converging beam. The optical disc device identifies the type of the optical disc according to the state of the information recording plane within a judgment region set across the managing region and the data recording region.
