PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ignition coil system for an internal combustion engine requiring less power consumption, capable of eliminating smoldering of an ignition plug, and improving ignition performance to air-fuel mixture. SOLUTION: The ignition coil system for the internal combustion engine includes a first secondary coil 21 outputting secondary voltage for eliminating smoldering of the ignition plug 41; a first secondary coil driving circuit 26 actuating the first secondary coil 21; a second secondary coil 31 outputting secondary voltage for improving the ignition performance to the air-fuel mixture of the ignition plug 41; a second secondary driving circuit 36 actuating the second secondary coil 31; a state determining means 61 determining a state of the ignition plug 41; and an ignition control signal supplying destination selecting means 71 supplying an ignition control signal S from an engine control device 51 to the first secondary coil driving circuit 26 when determining the ignition plug 41 is in a smoldering state, and supplying the ignition control signal S from the engine control device 51 to the second secondary coil driving circuit 36 when determining the ignition performance to the air-fuel mixture of the ignition plug 41 is in a bad state.
