PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently and accurately estimate the size, inclination, installation region, and the like of an original in an image reader for reading the original on an original platen by conveying a read unit. SOLUTION: A composite machine, namely the image reader, executes prescan operation to the tip of a readable region to generate image data, and allows the data to pass through an image filter to generate edge image data. Also, the edge image data are used to execute original estimation processing. In the original estimation processing, a group of edge points indicating the right end of the original, a group of edge points indicating the left end of the original, and a group of edge points indicating the lower end of the original are extracted (S420, S450, S460), approximate straight lines of respective groups of edge points are obtained (S437, S455, SS465), and the lower-left and lower-right corner positions of the original are estimated from the intersection point of the approximate straight lines (S480). The size of the original is estimated by estimating that a distance between lower-left and lower-right corners is the short-side length of the original and length√2 times longer than that of a short side is the long-side length of the original (S490), and the placement region of the original is estimated from these pieces of information (S497).
