<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the cost required for mounting a transmission by enabling the same parts of the transmission as used before the mounting other than an upper casing to be reused. <P>SOLUTION: This outboard motor 1 comprises: a lower casing 3 provided below the upper casing 2; and an engine 5 having a vertically-arranged crankshaft 6 that is mounted above the upper casing. The rotation of the crankshaft is transmitted to a drive shaft 18 pivotally supported in the upper casing, changed in speed by the transmission 26 mounted on the drive shaft, and transmitted to a propeller shaft 20 pivotally supported in the lower casing. The upper case comprises an upper-side casing 2a and a lower-side casing 2b.
