PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical unit capable of suppressing cost rising and occurrence of faults, while talking into account the improvement in the luminance and color purity, and to provide an illuminator and a projection-type video display device. SOLUTION: The illuminator is equipped with: a dichroic mirror 112 guiding first color component light in a first direction, and guiding synthetic light including second color component light and third color component light in a second direction, according to the wavelength characteristics of the color component light; a polarized light conversion element 60 for converting a polarization state of the third color component light, without converting the polarization state of the second color component light; a reflection element 61, provided on the light-emitting side of the polarized light conversion element 60, transmitting the second color component light and reflecting the third color component light to the dichroic mirror 112; a reflection mirror 80 for reflecting the third color component light guided in the third direction by the dichroic mirror 112 to the dichroic mirror 112 side; and a polarized light adjusting element 70, constituted so as to be able to electrically adjust the polarization state of the third color component light.
