<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparing a polydiene. <P>SOLUTION: The process comprises a step to polymerize a conjugated diene monomer with a lanthanide-based catalyst system including the combination or reaction product of: (a) a lanthanide compound selected from the group consisting of lanthanide organophosphates, lanthanide organophosphonates, and lanthanide organophosphinates, (b) an alkylating agent, and (c) a chlorine-containing compound.
