PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out stable image formation over a long period of time by suitably applying a lubricant which is supplied to a surface of an image holding member from a lubricant supplying means to the surface of the image holding member by a leveling member. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus has the lubricant supplied to the surface of the image holding member by the lubricant supplying means 30 after residual matter remaining on the surface of the image holding member after transferring is removed by a cleaning unit 20, then the lubricant is applied to the surface of the image holding member by the leveling member 40. In this case, the lubricant supplying means is provided with a solid lubricant 32, a rotatable brush member 31 for scraping off the lubricant from the solid lubricant and supplying the lubricant to the surface of the image holding member and a pressing means 33 for pressing the solid lubricant and the brush member. Conductive fiber with fiber thickness of 10 to 20μm and fiber density of 3.0×10<SP>8</SP>to 1.5×10<SP>9</SP>fibers/m<SP>2</SP>is used for the brush member. Bias voltage which is of a reverse polarity as the charging polarity of the conductive fibers to the lubricant is applied to this brush member. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
