A composition for improving brain function and cognitive function is provided to improve the functions using alcohol of Betula platy phylla extract and its fraction. A composition for improving brain function and cognitive function comprises C1-4 alcohol extract of Betula platy phylla bark only or pharmaceutically or sitologically allowable excipient. The composition also comprises organic solvent fraction of C1-4 alcohol extract of Betula platy phylla bark only or further comprises pharmaceutically or sitologically allowable excipient. The fraction is obtained using butanol, hexane, ether, ethyl acetate, chloroform, dichloromethane, benzene, and acetone. The composition is used in treating and preventing memory loss, damage of memory, amnesia, or Alzheimer disease. A health food containing the composition is used in a form of tablet, capsule, powder, granule, liquid, and pill.
