A slot device connecting mobile phone for operating a smart card and a method thereof are provided to relay the communication between a mobile communication terminal, which has 20 pins or 24 connection terminals, and a smart card that has 8 contacts. It is checked whether or not smart cards(200) are connected to a slot device(300), and the connection checking result is transmitted to a mobile communication terminal(400). When the smart cards support an IC-USB interface, the IC-USB interface is activated. Through the IC-USB interface, the data communication between the mobile communication terminal and the smart cards is relayed. The mobile communication terminal is connected to the external smart cards through the slot device.
