PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength multiplex optical amplifier capable of solving problems of "oscillation" and "output variation due to ASE" in case of abrupt change in the number of input wavelengths. SOLUTION: The wavelength multiplex optical amplifier (3) having a first-stage optical amplification unit (10) and a second-stage optical amplification unit (20), and a common AGC circuit (18) performing AGC control over the first-and second-stage optical amplification units (10, 20) in common is further provided with an exciting light distributing means (30) of applying exciting light to the first-and second-stage optical amplification units (10, 20) at a predetermined distribution ratio.
