PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chip removal device and a chip removal method enabling the removal of chips entangled with a workpiece by hand and the easy removal of the chips from the hand. SOLUTION: This chip removal device 10 comprises a pair of hands 14A, 14B having claw parts 15B at the ends, respectively, and holding the workpiece 40 from both sides by the claw parts 15B. A generally semi-circular recessed part 15C is so formed in the end surface of each claw parts 15B as to surround the outer peripheral surface of the workpiece 40. The chip removal device 10 further comprises an opening/closing device 16 for opening the hands 14A, 14B by 180°. When the portion of the workpiece 40 near the chips 44 is held by the claw parts 15B of the hands 14A, 14B from both sides and the hands 14A, 14B are moved axially outward, the chips 44 can be removed from the workpiece 40.
