Methods (300) and systems (100) for messaging in a collaborative environment (102) are disclosed. In one embodiment of the invention, metadata (500, 900) associated with a message (412) can be inherited from attachments to that message and/or bequeathed to discussions which includes that message. In this embodiment provision of discussions comprising related messages (406) and searches (1200) through the messages are thereby facilitated. In one embodiment of the invention, the system (102) of the current invention is operated by an application service provider. Methods (1100) and systems (102) for presence management in a collaborative environment (102) are disclosed. In one embodiment of the invention, rules are established to determine under what circumstances an entity is fully, partially or not accessible. In this embodiment, access to that entity is controlled based on the established rules. In one embodiment of the invention, the system of the current invention is operated by an application service provider.
