PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel method estimating a distance to an object by using imaging signals generated by an automatic focus image sensor of an imaging device. SOLUTION: Image data of each image sensor are processed and detected edges therein. The corresponding edge image is generated in each edge sensor. The corresponding edge image is correlated. A shift of the other edge image for one edge image that yields the best match therebetween is determined. Further, a distance estimation is calculated based on at least the determined shift.
