A display apparatus and a method of driving the same are provided to form vertical electric field in a liquid crystal layer when a display state is changed from high gradation to low gradation to quickly recover a state of liquid crystal molecule in vertical alignment, thereby improving display quality. The first display panel comprises the first electrode(161) and the second electrode(165). The first electrode receives the first driving voltage determined according to display gradation information. The second electrode receives the second driving voltage determined according to the display gradation information. The second display panel comprises the third electrode(231). The third electrode receives a common voltage. A liquid crystal layer is positioned between the first display panel and the second display panel. The liquid crystal layer is made of liquid crystal molecule. When voltages are not applied to the first to third electrodes, the liquid crystal molecule is vertically aligned in the first and second display plates.
