<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a 258 phosphor of improved persistence characteristic, a composition containing the phosphor, and a luminescent device, an image display and a lighting system that use the phosphor. <P>SOLUTION: The phosphor is represented by the following formula (I): Eu<SB>2x</SB>Tm<SB>2y</SB>(Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba)<SB>2-2x-2y</SB>Si<SB>5</SB>X<SB>8</SB>(I).
