The invention relates to a method for reinforcing at least one annular groove of a piston for an internal combustion engine. In said method, after producing a piston blank, a heterogeneous structure is homogenized using a refusion process in the zone of the annular groove that is to be introduced, and alloying additions are fused with the help of a source of heat in said first step of the refusion process and are thus added in the zone that is to be reinforced. According to the invention, the structure that is already partially homogenized is again superficially fused in another step with the help of the source of heat, but without adding any alloying additions.
