PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a viscosity improving agent giving excellent finish characteristics (smoothness, vividness, sag preventing property, and the like). SOLUTION: The viscosity improving agent contains a copolymer comprising the following monomers as essential constituents: (a) (meth)acrylic acid (acrylate); (b) a monomer represented by a formula (1) (wherein R<SB>1</SB>is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R<SB>2</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>are each a hydrogen atom, methyl group or ethyl group, R<SB>4</SB>is a residue obtained by removing a hydrogen atom from a hydroxy group of cyclic terpene monoalcohol or sterol, and n is an integer of 3-60); (c) alkyl(meth)acrylate having a 1-4C alkyl group; and (d) a multifunctional monomer. Based on the total weight of the respective monomer units (a)-(d), the content of the unit (a) is 0.1-50 wt.%, the content of the unit (b) is 5-60 wt.%, the content of the unit (c) is 5-60 wt.%, and the content of the unit (d) is 0.05-5 wt.%.
