<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for modifying the operation and/or performance of a gas turbine by accurately determining the combustion reference temperature. <P>SOLUTION: The method 300 for modifying the operation and/or performance of the gas turbine including a plurality of combustors includes: step 305 of measuring a gas exhaust temperature of the gas turbine; and step 310 of estimating a heat transfer rate of the gas turbine, based at least in part on the gas exhaust temperature. After estimating the heat transfer rate, in the method, a transiently accurate combustion reference temperature is estimated, and step 320 is implemented in which the plurality of combustors of the gas turbine is controlled by using this parameter.
