The method for cleaning a particulate filer (10) for an exhaust line of a heat engine involves making a cleaning gas stream flow through the filter (10) from the downstream side (17) to the upstream side (14) thereof with reference to the direction of flow of the exhaust gases through the filter (10); stopping the flow of the cleaning gas stream; placing a barrier (25) over the central part of the downstream side (17) of the filter (10); and making the cleaning gas stream flow in such a way that the same is channelled by said barrier (25) to the periphery of the particulate filter (10).
