A vessel filter comprises a body made from a single tube (11). The tube is cut to create a plurality of elongated struts (14, 114, 214) forming a filter region (19) and a mounting region (17) having a greater transverse dimension than a transverse dimension of the filter region. The mounting region includes a plurality of vessel engaging hooks (72a, 72b), the hooks having a penetrating tip (76a, 76b) pointing in a direction toward the filter region, a plurality of teeth (79a, 79b) for engaging the vessel, and a heel (77a, 77b) extending beyond the teeth in a direction opposite the direction of the penetrating tip.
