[Class 114] In apparatus for warping ships through locks &c. having underneath racks to which the ship is secured as described in the parent Specification, the rack is arranged beneath ground level and in order to allow the guide passage in which the rack is housed, to be increased by the lock gates, the ship is secured to a disconnectible rack section 22, Fig. 4, or to members 28, 29, Fig. 10 disconnectible from the rack. In the construction of Fig. 4, separate racks 14, 16 having actuating gear 15, 17 are arranged respectively in front of the entrance gate 5 and beyond the exit gate 6 of the lock 4. The approaching ship is secured to the section 22 which is at this time in front of the lock gate 5, the gate is opened and the gear 15 actuated to move the ship into the lock. The section 22 is then disconnected, the remaining rack section withdrawn and the gate 5 closed. The gate 6 is then opened, the rack 16 drawn back by its gear 17 and attached to the section 22 and then advanced to carry the ship beyond the gate 6. The action of the construction of Fig. 10 is similar but the members 28, 29 are mounted in separate guides in a channel in front of the guide channel for the rack 33. A recess 36 forming a continuation of these channels is formed in the lock gate, which is provided with a sluice 40 to cover the recess when the gate is closed.</p> |
