<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a barcode reading method and barcode reader for improving reading accuracy, even when there are mixed similar patterns of bar codes of multiple types of standards. <P>SOLUTION: When a partial code pattern of a first barcode, based on a first standard may be read as a second barcode based on a second standard, reading is carried out, by applying a reading algorithm of the second standard to a light-dark pattern string Ba which is obtained by binarizing the read bar code. In addition, when it is decided that there is a character Bb for decision existing, in at least one of both end vicinities of the light-dark pattern string Ba, the light-dark pattern string Ba is assumed to be a partial code pattern of the first barcode and a margin position, corresponding to the first barcode is estimated.
