A stretch blow molded container having enhanced gas barrier properties for packaging of foods and beverages prepared from an injection molded preform which comprises a polyester composition comprising a polyester and a purine derivative (such as caffeine which is a purine dione) is disclosed, wherein the purine derivative comprises a compound having the chemical structure of Formula (I). The container has enhanced carbon dioxide and oxygen barrier properties and is suitable for carbonated beverages.
